Odette Powell was born on the 21st of September 1955 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Odette has no formal training or education in the arts. She only started experimenting with arts in 1987 as a remedy to her “soul” after her husband and father of 2 children passed away as a result of tragic accident after 5 years of a happy marriage.
Odette’s art career seriously begun a few years later in Natal after she had become quite competent at using pastels. Her favourite themes at that stage were wildlife and ethnic portraits.
A move to the Lowveld saw Odette opening her own art and framing gallery and shop that has thrived in Nelspruit (30 minutes from the Kruger National Park) for the last 15 years. Most locals refer to it as “the most interesting shop in the city”. It is an expression of her love for art and interior decorating instinct. Odette finds her inspiration in creating “anything” with beauty whether it be her garden or the canvas that is brought to life.
Besides her popularity in South Africa, her work has crept into the hearts of some residing in the United States, Netherlands, and other African countries. Odette enjoys a challenge and continually refreshes her style, technique, and themes with current trends. Her style, as it has evolved, can best be summed up as the perfect balance between creative expression and realism.
